Laparoscopic prostatectomy is a minimally invasive surgical approach for removing prostate cancer in men. The surgery removes all or part of the prostate gland, seminal vesicles, and possibly, adjacent tissue with the aid of laparoscopic instruments. Unlike open prostatectomy, laparoscopic prostatectomy only requires 4-5 small port incisions where the surgeon inserts the specialized instruments. The surgery is performed without the surgeon’s hands entering the patient’s body. Visualization, dissection, and removal of the cancerous prostate is accomplished using hand laparoscopy instruments.
Although laparoscopic prostatectomy is a relatively new procedure, its use is being replaced by robotic assisted prostatectomy. In most cases, laparoscopic prostatectomy, or robotic assisted prostatectomy, are the best surgical approaches to treat prostate cancer. Dr. O’Connell has proven mastery in both procedures.
